Dear friends,
With your help and support, the East
Timor and Indonesia Action Network (ETAN) has been
protecting the lives and safety of the people under the heavy
thumb of Indonesia's security forces for thirty years.
ETAN was founded soon after the November 1991
Santa Cruz massacre. That tragic event, broadcast around
the world, made many aware of the critical situation of the
countries under Indonesian rule and inspired the
founding
of ETAN and many other solidarity groups.
Since
then, ETAN has if anything intensified its efforts in
solidarity with the peoples of the Indonesian achipelago.
Now in our 30th year, and with your support, we can
continue our pursuit of justice for the many victims of the
crimes of Indonesia's security forces, from the coup in 1965
that brought the dictator Suharto to power, through the
illegal invasion and occupation of Timor-Leste, to the
ongoing human rights violations against West Papuans.
But we need your help to keep up the pressure on the
U.S. government to acknowledge its role in arming and
training the perpetrators of those crimes. In this season,
when those of us who seek peace and justice throughout the
world tend to reflect on what we can do in the coming
months, please consider the ongoing crises of human rights
violations that still lie at Indonesia's door.

Your gift will help us maintain and strengthen ETAN's
crucial information sharing via email and on social media.
Our Timor
news listserv recently exceeded 10,000 subscribers with
more added each day. These and many others - perhaps
including you - depend on ETAN to stay informed about
important news and analysis about Timor-Leste, Indonesia,
and West Papua via
our
listservs, social media and website.
This coming year, we will be focusing on protecting the
rights of the people of West Papua, particularly around
their struggle for self-determination, among other critical
efforts.
We are also excited to be planning
a
virtual meeting in 2022 with Timorese studying abroad.
And of course we will continue to keep you informed about
all our work for human rights in that important part of the
globe.
In this season of hope for peace and good
will everywhere, please give what you can to contribute to
these and other ETAN initiatives.
Thank you for any
support you can provide.
Thank you,
John M. Miller
