UN-Indonesian accord on human rights is "derisory" - Ramos Horta
Lisbon, 14 Aug (Lusa) - East Timorese Nobel Peace Prize co-laureate Jose Ramos Horta in
Lisbon on Friday described an agreement signed between the UN and Indonesia on
"access" of a UN human rights observer to his occupied home land as
"derisory." Speaking to LUSA in Lisbon by telephone, Ramos Horta said the accord
was of "no interest at all" to East Timor. Ramos Horta, who is the
vice-president of the National Timorese Resistance Council, said he was against the accord
between the regime in Jakarta and the UN Human Rights High Commissioner in Geneva because
it only provided for "technical co-operation" with Indonesia, but not for a
special UN mission investigating human rights abuses in East Timor. Ramos Horta said the
access of UN human rights observers to East Timor was "just a a verbal
commitment."
