Ramos Horta Suggests Creation of Weapons Trade-In Fund
Lisbon, Feb. 15 (Lusa) - Exiled East Timorese resistance leader Jose Ramos Horta called
Sunday for the creation of an "international fund" to encourage armed civilians
to trade in their weapons for "food and other goods." Meeting with East Timorese
refugees in Lisbon, Ramos Horta said such a fund could help reduce growing tensions and
violence between pro- and anti-independence supporters. He urged his people to show
"tolerance to Indonesians, pro-integrationists, informers and torturers."
"East Timor must be an example of the defense and observance of human rights,"
the Nobel Peace Prize laureate said. "Our policy must be one of tolerance and
forgiveness."
