22 FEV 99 - 09:08 East Timor: EU supports consultation process in East Timor

Bonn, Feb 22 (Lusa) - The European Union has appealed for a public consultation process of the population of East Timor under the auspices of the United Nations. The appeal is part of a communique issued by the German foreign ministry in Bonn on Sunday. Germany presently hold the rotating EU presidency. The communique says a fair and free consultation of the people of East Timor about their homeland's political future has the full support of the EU, adding a consultation process is needed to find a lasting solution to the problem of East Timor. The EU communique urges Indonesia to release Xanana Gusmao and all other East Timorese political prisoners from detention and further reduce its military presence in East Timor. The communique expresses concern about the reported distribution of arms among militias in East Timor.-Lusa nnnn
