Timor's Gusmao to meet Albright March 5 -lawyer 07:13 a.m. Feb 26, 1999 Eastern

JAKARTA, Feb 26 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright will meet East Timorese rebel leader Xanana Gusmao on March 5, Gusmao's lawyer told Reuters on Friday.

Albright will be the most senior foreign representative ever to meet Gusmao, who was moved earlier this month to house arrest in Jakarta from prison. In 1993 he was sentenced to 20 years in jail for his armed fight against Indonesia's rule of East Timor.

``It is true -- today we discussed the security for her coming on March 5,'' said Johnson Panjaitan, Gusmao's lawyer.

Indonesia invaded the eastern half of Timor island in 1975 and annexed it the following year, a move not recognised by the United Nations. which still regards its former colonial ruler Portugal as the administering power.

Albright was due to arrive in Indonesia on March 4 as part of a trip to Asia that will also take in China and Thailand.
