UN looks to clean up East Timor's image
The United Nations (UN) says it is worried about the spread of
misinformation on the situation in East Timor.
The UN says stories about killing and rape in the region have given a
bad image and have led to the slow return of refugees from West Timor.
The chief of staff from the UN administration in East Timor, Param
Eswaran, has arrived in Kupang in West Timor at the head of a team that
will tour camps where thousands of refugees are still living.
"We have brought with us a whole stack of information material,
but particularly important at this point in time - we are approaching this
visit with an Easter orientation and I have been bringing along with me a
message signed by the two bishops," he said.
"This is a special message of appeal to the Timorese people who
are here to come back, especially at this time of Easter."
