East Timor: National Red Cross in Final Stages of Preparation 10 Apr-19:18

Plans to set up a National Red Cross in East Timor are nearing completion after more than a year of prep[ar]atory work, the International Federation of the Red Cross confirmed on Tuesday.

The project is overseen by the East Timorese Jose Pereira da Conceiçao, whose first contact with the institution was in 1975, when as a 15-year old refugee he received treatment in Indonesian West Timor.

"I liked the work of the Red Cross and wanted to participate. Since then I've also kept the Red Cross close to heart", Conceiçao said.

The prepa[ra]tory team he now coordinates is composed of 15 other East Timorese, some of them drawn from the structure in place during the Indonesian occupation.
