East Timor: Work Group Studying Post-UNTAET Future 11 Apr-20:20

East Timor's future after the mandate of the current UN transition administration (UNTAET) ends and the eventual levels of required international aid are the focus of a special commission set up recently in the territory.

The half-East Timorese, half-international working group includes members drawn from the territory's National Council (transition legislature), the UN Development Program (PNUD) and UNTAET. It is chaired by Emilia Pires, of East Timor's National Planning and Development Agency.

UNTAET expects the group to submit by May a report identifying the positions and areas that need urgent attention before the end of the administration's mandate, which was recently extended to Jan. 2002.
