East Timor: Vote Registration Advancing Well, 160,000 Already on Books
30 Abr-13:34
More than 160,000 East Timorese have registered during the first six
weeks of a UN-led registration drive for the territory's August 30
constituent assembly elections, a decisive step towards independence, UN
officials announced Monday in Dili.
The average number of daily registrations, they added, had climbed to
7,500, 2,000 more than at the start of the campaign, which began March 16.
Officials are hopeful the pace of registrations, which are scheduled to
run through June 20, will increase even more with the expected arrival of
new computer equipment soon.
More than 400,000 East Timorese registered to take part in the
territory's 1999 plebiscite for independence from Indonesian rule.
