East Timor: Legislature Approves Budget for First Arms' Purchases 4

East Timor's transitional legislature Friday approved the first
purchase of arms for the territory's fledgling defense and police forces.
In an unanimous vote, the National Council approved a dlrs 2.34 million
arms budget to buy 1,200 M-16 automatic rifles and other small caliber
weapons for the defense force, pistols for the police and equipment for a
yet to be created riot police unit.
While the arms supplier was not disclosed, the bill stipulates that the
purchases be effected by June 30.
