East Timor: Fretilin Plans Civic Education Program 16 Mai-18:27
East Timor's Fretilin party may use the campaign period before August
30 elections to implement a territory-wide grass-roots civic education
program.
The historic independence party's deputy coordinator, Mari Alkatiri,
told Lusa Wednesday that the civic education process in the territory was
behind schedule, but there was "still time" to change the
situation.
He also suggested that other party signatories of a national unity pact
likewise focus on civic education "as a way for our people to know
what they're voting for".
East Timorese political parties are expected to sign in the near future
a national unity pact that will, along with a subsequent code of conduct,
underpin the process leading up to the Aug. 30 ballot.
Voters will in August choose members of a constituent assembly, whose
task will be to prepare the UN-run territory's future national
constitution. Fretilin is one of three political parties that have already
registered with authorities to take part in the elections.
