President Megawati Sukarnoputri of Indonesia could visit Portugal during a trip to Europe next year, in response to an earlier invitation by her Portuguese counterpart, Jorge Sampaio.

Megawati`s interest in visiting Portugal was conveyed to Portugal`s minister of youth and sports, Jose Lello, at a Thursday meeting in the presidential palace in Jakarta.

Lello told Lusa after the meeting that he had repeated Sampaio`s invitation, which had originally been communicated by Portuguese Foreign Minister Jaime Gama to the previous Indonesian head of state, Abdurraham Wahid.

"The meeting was rather positive, the president showed kindness and understanding, receiving me in a very pleasant manner. It was a warm welcome", said the Portuguese minister.
