A total of 273 East Timorese students arrived in Lisbon Sunday, taking advantage of study bursaries offered by the Portuguese government, to pursue their studies in universities, polytechnics and vocational training colleges.

Sunday's party are part of a group of 317 Timorese awarded grants to study in Portugal as part of a program organized by the Ministry of Education and the Commission for Support to Transition in East Timor. The remaining 44 students will arrive in Lisbon next month.

The grants are equivalent to the Portuguese national minimum salary and designed to cover housing and food costs. A source in the Commission for Support to Transition in East Timor told Lusa that a small number of the group would take Portuguese classes before beginning their college courses.
