Seoul to build hall in E. Timor
South Korea will dedicate an independence hall in East Timor on May 20,
when the first independent government will be established in the Southeast
Asian territory, the Foreign Ministry said yesterday.
Seoul plans to donate $600,000 to build the 792-sq.-meter memorial
hall, for which construction will begin soon.
Immediately after the new administration kicks off, South Korea will
establish diplomatic ties and upgrade its representative office there,
which opened in June last year, to an embassy, officials said.
The former Portuguese colony was occupied by Indonesia in 1975 and is
now under U.N. transitional rule, following a vote for independence in
1999.
