East Timor will formally present its candidacy as a United Nations member state at the time of the territory`s independence on May, 20.

The decision was taken Tuesday during a meeting of the Constituent Assembly in Dili. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation will forward the request to the UN Secretary-General.

"The acquisition of status as a United Nations member state is a factor of major importance, in so far as it places East Timor in the international panorama and brings Timor even closer to the other members of that organization", states a note sent by the Constituent Assembly to Lusa.
