East Timor“s leaders joined the president of Portugal“s national Lusa News Agency, Manuel Pedroso Marques, Wednesday in inaugurating the agency“s new installations in Dili.

UN administrator Sergio Vieria de Mello and Chief Minister Mari Alkatiri were among scores of officials attending the inauguration of the two-building complex.

Widely considered the prime source of news on East Timor, Lusa has maintained a permanent presence in the territory since 1999, distributing more than 10,000 dispatches on the transition to independence from Indonesian rule.

Lusa“s coverage of East Timorese developments has become a pivotal source of news for Timorese media, Dili-based diplomats and non-governmental organizations working in the territory.

The agency“s service is provided free of charge to two local daily newspapers and its dispatches are widely used in Portuguese language classes across the country.
