Nearly 400 foreign observers will join more than 1,800 East Timorese in monitoring the territory´s presidential election Sunday, according to figures released Wednesday by electoral officials in Dili.

Officials said the high number of local observers, representing 74 non-governmental organizations, appeared to reflect a growing interest on the part of civil society in accompanying the political process.
