to Monitor Sunday Vote
Nearly 400 foreign observers will join more than 1,800 East Timorese in
monitoring the territory´s presidential election Sunday, according to
figures released Wednesday by electoral officials in Dili.
Officials said the high number of local observers, representing 74
non-governmental organizations, appeared to reflect a growing interest on
the part of civil society in accompanying the political process.
One of the largest contingents among the 375 international observers
from 42 countries will come from Portugal, which sends 33.
