East Timor: Gov't scrutinizes 2 reports on Dili riots Wednesday
Dili, Dec. 17 (Lusa) - The East Timorese government is to analyze a report
from an independent inquiry into the rioting of Dec. 4, which has drawn together
accounts of the violence from 20 Timorese and foreign witnesses.
A government source told Lusa Tuesday that the report is still being studied
by Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri, who will present the document to a meeting of
the Dili cabinet Wednesday.
The head of the independent inquiry, Mariano Lopes da Cruz, told Lusa that
"it is necessary to deepen investigations" to discover all those
responsible for Timor's worst violence since pro-Jakarta militias went on a
deadly rampage in 1999.
A parliamentary investigation into this month's disturbances has already been
handed over to the Dili government and this report will also be discussed at the
meeting of the Timorese executive.
The head of the parliamentary inquiry team told Lusa Monday that the Dec. 4
street protests began "spontaneously" but appeared to have
deteriorated into mob violence with "political motivation".
