East Timor: President Gusmao received by Indonesian parliament
The speaker of the Indonesian parliament said Tuesday that despite
continuing problems between Jakarta and Dili, there should be a
strengthening of ties between the two Southeast Asian nations.
Akbar Tanjung made his comments in the presence of East Timorese
President Xanana Gusmao, who was visiting the Jakarta legislature Tuesday
during a state visit to Indonesia.
"I believed in Xanana Gusmao`s commitment before he became
president and I am confident that this endeavor will continue now that he
is president", said Tanjung.
"I know that there are some problems to be resolved between us and
I am prepared to work together to build a strong relationship", added
the speaker of Jakarta`s lower chamber.
Gusmao expressed his thanks for "the political position" of
the Indonesian parliament, calling to the assembly to forget the past.
"We hope that now we are a new country, we can achieve a
relationship with Indonesia which is a great country that we respect and
one which we also hope can help us", said Gusmao.
Gusmao arrived in Jakarta Tuesday on day two a three- day state visit
to Indonesia at the head of a Timorese government delegation. He met
earlier with Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri.
