EAST TIMOR VOWS TO FIGHT POVERTY AS NEWSET MEMBER OF THE UNITED NATIONS

At 0830hours this morning New York time, East Timor will become the 191st and newest Member State of the United Nations family. Already the tiny nation is vowing to use this position to fight poverty.

“East Timor will choose to focus on issues which fight against poverty, and for debt irradication, fair trade and increasing development assistance from the rich to the poor.” Senior Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Jose Ramos-Horta said from New York today.

Dr Ramos-Horta is in New York for this special event with His Excellancy President Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao (who will address the Unted Nations General Assembly today), Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri and East Timor’s Deputy Foreign Minister and Permanant Resident Representative to the United Nations Dr Jose Luis Guterres.

“Jose Luis Guterres has been here in New York for many years. He knows the United Nations system and many people.” Dr Jose Ramos-Horta said of Mr Guterres, who will also be the East Timor’s first Ambassador to the United States of America.

“The United Nations is an association of all independent, sovereign nations. And it provides an important forum for East Timor to present it’s views and contribute towards shaping consensus on a range of problems effecting humankind.” Dr Ramos-Horta said.

Near destruction followed East Timor’s overwhelming vote for independence in the 1999 United Nations sponsored popular consultation. For the next two years East Timor was a Untied Nations Administred Territory.

Independence was declared on May 20, 2002, with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan handing power over to the democratically elected government of the independent Deomcaratice Republic Of Timor-Leste (RDTL).

According to the United Nations Department of public Informations “Membership to the United Nations is open to all peace-loving nations which accept the obligations of the Charter and are willing and able to carry out these obligations”. The General Assembly admits new Member States on the reccomendation of the United Nations Security Council. In May 2002, the five members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC): China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, recommended East Timor become a Member State of the United Nations. East Timor will today be admitted to the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Although East Timor is now an independent sovereign nation with a democratically elected Parliament, Prime Minister, President, constitution and flag, the United Nations maintains a presence in East Timor, through the United Nations Mission is Support of East Timor (UNMISET) and the International Peacekeeping Force.

President Xanana Gusmao will give a press conference at United Nations headquarters, New York, at 1100 hours today.

SEBAGAI ANGGOTA NEGARA BARU PBB TIMOR-LESTE BERJANJI AKAN MEMERANGI KEMISKINAN

Pada 0830 pagi ini waktu New York, Timor-Leste akan menjadi negara anggota PBB yang ke 191 dan menjadi keluarganya PBB. Berjanji untuk menggunkan posisi ini untuk memerangi kemiskinan.

“Timor-Leste memilih akan lebih fokus dalam memerangi kemiskinan, dan menghancurkan debet, perdagangan bebas dan penambahan bantuan pembanguan dari yang kaya kepada yang miskin.” Demikian kata Senior Menteri, Menteri Luar Negeri dan Kerjasama Dr José Ramos-Horta dari New York hari ini.

Dr. Ramos-Horta di New York untuk acara special ini dengan Presiden Xanana Gusmăo yang akan memberikan pidatonya di Sidang Umum PBB hari ini, bersama Perdana Menteri Mari Alkatiri dan Dr. José Luis Guterres, Wakil Menteri untuk Luar Negeri dan Duta Besar untuk PBB.

“José Luis Guterres tinggal di New York selama bertahun-tahun. Beliau telah mengenal sistem PBB dan juga orang-orang ini disini.”tambah Dr José Ramos-Horta. Mr. Guterres, juga akan menjabat sebagai Duta Besar Timor-Leste yang pertama untuk Amerika Serikat.

“PBB adalah kumpulan negara-negara yang merdeka dan berdaulat, yang menyediakan forum penting bagi Timor-Leste untuk menyampaikan pandangan-pandangannya dan kontribusi untuk membukan jalan menuju consensus yang mana sebagai suatu masalah dalam penyimpan manusia. tambah Dr.Ramos-horta.

Setelah penghancuran ketika Timor-Letse memilih untuk merdeka dengan dukungan dari PBB melalui konsultasi popular pada tahun 1999. Selama dua tahun Timor-Leste menjadi Daerah Administrasi PBB

Kemerdekaan penuh, di deklarasikan pada tanggal 20 Mei 2002, oleh Sekretaris Umum PBB Kofi Annan yang beliau menyerahkan kekuasaan kepada pemerintah terpilih Demokratik Republik Timor-Leste (RDTL).

Menurut Departemen Publik Informasi PBB “Keanggotaan untuk PBB terbuka untuk semua negara yang mencintai kedamaian yang menerima tanggunjawabnya sebagai tercantum dalam pasal dan bersedia untuk menerapkannya”. Sidang Umum menambah anggota negara baru dengan rekomendasi dari Dewan Keamanan PBB, pada bulan Mei 2002, lima negara anggota Dewan Kemanan PBB (UNSC): Cina, Perancis, Rusia, Inggris dan Amerika Serikar, merekomendasikan Timor-Leste untuk menjadi salah satu anggota PBB. Sekarang dan seterusnya Timor-Leste akan diakui di Sidang Umum New York.

Walaupun sekarang Timor-Leste adalah negara merdeka yang berdaulat dan demoratik memilih Parlemen, Perdana Menteri, Presiden, Undang-undang dan bendera, PBB masih tetap hadir di Timor-Leste, melalui Misi Dukungan PBB untuk Timor-Leste (UNMISET) dan Penjaga Kedamaian Internasional.
