East Timor: Human rights mean better living conditions, says President
Gusmão
Dili, Dec. 10 (Lusa) - Respect for human rights in East Timor has been
instrumental in the Dili government`s efforts to improve the quality of
life of the Timorese people, President Xanana Gusmão said Wednesday.
In a communique marking International Human Rights Day, Gusmão said
observance of human rights should translate into a constant effort by
governments to improve the quality of life of their citizens.
Global policies to safeguard human rights should guarantee basic
amenities and living conditions, Gusmão noted, adding that in Timor`s
case , these strategies must include "the rigorous combat of violence
... injustice and corruption".
