Charges laid over East Timor militia murder
In East Timor, prosecutors have laid murder charges against three
former militia members accused of crimes against humanity after the
independence ballot in 1999.
The former leader of the Aitarak militia, Beny Ludji and two militia
members under his command are accused of murdering independence
campaigner, Guido Alves Correia in September 1999.
It is alleged one of the accused, Jose Lopes da Cruz Mendonca threw a
spear at Correia in his own home, hitting him in the back and that other
militia then hacked him to death.
Ludji and the other accused, Jose Pereira are already in detention in
East Timor and are expected to stand trial soon.
Mendonca is believed to be at large in Indonesia.
