07 May 2003 Territory training for East Timor's Fisheries Management Officers

he Northern Territory Minister for Primary Industry and Fisheries, Dr Chris Burns MLA, today met with representatives of the East Timor Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, who have been in Darwin undertaking training with the Territory Department of Business, Industry and Resource Development.

Mr Lorenco Dos Reis Amaral and Mr Anselmo Lopes Amaral, of the East Timor Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries are in Darwin for two weeks for on the job training and assistance in managing tropical fisheries. Both officials are responsible for overseeing the development of East Timor's fishing industry and have been working with senior officials of the Northern Territory Fisheries Group, Department of Business Industry and Resource Development..

East Timor's fisheries administration is new and is seeking training in tropical fisheries management to assist in establishing sustainable fisheries. Officials are obtaining practical experience in encouraging the sustainable development of fisheries resources and preventing over-fishing.

The Northern Territory is highly regarded, nationally and internationally, for its expertise in managing tropical fisheries. It is for this reason that East Timor sought expertise and practical training from the Northern Territory.

While in Darwin, East Timor Fisheries Officials have received practical training is managing commercial fisheries, viewed commercial fishing and fish farming ventures and will be working with the Fisheries Research division within DBIRD.

The visit has been made possible with the assistance of the Crawford Foundation, with training provided by the Fisheries Group, DBIRD as part of the Northern Territory's ongoing commitment to assist the people of East Timor.
