Australia encouraged to embrace globalisation
East Timor's Foreign Affairs Minister, Jose Ramos-Horta, has told a
public administration conference in Brisbane that globalisation will
ultimately lead to the end of the traditional concept of sovereignty.
Dr Ramos-Horta says society has become more mobilised, educated and
informed through expanding globalisation and communication improvements.
He says it is in Australia's interest to embrace change and foster
regional relationships, as it has done in the past.
"We would not be free today, we would not be making the progress
that we are making today without the partnership of so many countries; the
generosity from countries like Australia and others - the interdependency
is a reality," he said.
He says the development of inter-country relations will only work to
improve the region's overall economic standing.
"It is in Australia's interest in the sense that Australia does
not have to worry about instability and insecurity, in the sense that if
East Timor is prosperous, East Timor can buy from Australia, can sell to
Australia - so it is in everybody's interest," he said.
