Timor: Campaign to get rice to the hungry launched in Portugal
Lisbon, Oct. 1 (Lusa) - A month-long campaign entitled "Give Rice
Now", aimed at alleviating hunger in parts of East Timor, was
launched Wednesday by a number of Portuguese organizations.
The initiative, organized by state radio RDP and the Lisbon City
Council, will also involve a battalion of Portuguese peacekeeping troops
stationed in Timor.
The soldiers will distribute the rice to needy populations in the
district of Suai, the Oecussi enclave in West Timor and the island of
Atauro.
A joint statement from the organizers stated: "International aid
does not reach all who need it. We have to show our solidarity with the
most vulnerable in Timor".
Organizers said bags of rice could be given to volunteer collectors, or
money donations made to a special bank account.
