East Timor: MPs call for attorney general to probe oil bribe report
Dili, March 31 (Lusa) - East Timor`s parliament approved on Wednesday a
motion calling for Dili`s Attorney General to investigate media
allegations that lawmakers received bribes from an oil company.
The motion was proposed by the ruling Fretilin party and calls for
Timor`s top legal official to "urgently" investigate a Dili
newspaper report that MPs were bribed by an international oil firm in
exchange for granting oil exploration rights.
An American oil company launched a lawsuit at the beginning of March
against the Australian government, alleging that a Canberra official gave
USD 50,000 in bribes to Dili MPs, on behalf of a rival company, to get oil
rights in the Timor Sea.
