Timor: Bishop Belo 'tempted' to run for presidency
Dili, Feb. 23 (Lusa) -, East Timor`s religious leader during its long
independence struggle, Bishop Carlos Ximenes Belo, said Monday that he is
fighting the urge to enter politics for fear of dividing his country`s
people.
Belo, Bishop of Dili, told Lusa he was strongly tempted to enter
Timor`s next presidential elections, but "there will be pro- bishop
voters and others against, which is not good".
The Catholic prelate, a Noble Peace laureate, said his mission as a
priest was to "unite the people, rather than divide them".
