Tokyo, 9 July: The Foreign Ministry said Friday [9 July] it will provide up
to 1.3bn yen [about 11.95m US dollars] in grant aid for projects concerning
power supply in East Timor and Kiribati.
Tokyo will extend up to 528m yen for a project to rehabilitate the sole power
station in East Timor's capital Dili and a maximum of 796m yen for a project to
upgrade power plant facilities in Kiribati's capital Tarawa.
In East Timor, 70 per cent of the infrastructure was destroyed following
political upheavals in 1999. The rehabilitation project will trim the annual
power outage in Dili and its suburbs by 10 per cent from the current 1,200
hours, the ministry said.
The ministry also said it will offer up to 344m yen in grant aid for an
afforestation project in arid regions of Myanmar.
