Kupang: The Government of the Democratic Republic of East Timor (RDTL)
has urged the United Nations (UN) Security Council (SC) to withdraw the
Alert V status in West Timor, NTT [Eastern Lesser Sundas] Province. The
maintenance of this status is having a negative impact on the development
of tourism in East Timor.
According to the Head of the NTT Social Management Bureau Regional
Secretariat, Stanis Tefa, Foreign Minister Ramos Horta explained this
request from the RDTL government when meeting with NTT Governor, Piet A
Tallo, at the Central Maritime Hotel, Dili, on Wednesday (19 May). Stanis
Tefa accompanied Governor Tallo to the meeting with Foreign Minister Ramos
Horta.
When meeting with Pos Kupang on Thursday (21 May), Stanis Tefa further
explained that Ramos Horta and Governor Tallo also discussed the problem
of dealing with former refugees from East Timor. [passage omitted]
The governor and Mrs Ernie Tallo were in Dili, according to Stanis Tefa,
on the invitation of the RDTL government to attend the second birthday
celebration of RDTL independence on 20 May 2004. While in Dili, the
governor paid a visit to the Seroja Heroes' Graveyard and held dialogues
with Indonesian citizens there.
