Atambua, E Nusa Tenggara, Sept 25 (ANTARA) - The government of Alor district
in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province is sounding out the possibility of a
trade cooperation with neighboring East Timor.
Alor district government spokesman, Isak Hopny Aly, said here Saturday that
district head, Ans Takalapeta, and his entourage will depart to the East
Timorese capital of Dili to consolidate the cooperation on trade, culture and
sports.
"The local government and the people of Alor are looking forward to
reopening a new page of cooperation with East Timor," Hopny Aly said,
adding that the good trading partnership during the country's integration with
Indonesia from 1976 to 1999 was snapped after East Timor's independence in
September 1999.
At that time, they traded candlenut, copra, coffee, fruits as well as
livestocks, flour, cooking oil, sugar and salt.
"Due to their proximity, East Timor's trade cooperation with Alor
district is expected to go along more smoothly than cooperations with other
districts in the southern part of East Nusa Tenggara," he noted.
