East Timor: Lisbon providing 30 police for new UN mission - Ambassador
Salgueiro
Washington, May 17 (Lusa) - Portugal stands ready to contribute 30
police officers to the new, revamped United Nations' mission in East
Timor, Portuguese Ambassador João Salgueiro, informed the Security
Council.
Salgueiro announced Lisbon's readiness to continue aiding UN efforts in
its former Asian territory during Security Council discussions of East
Timor in New York Monday.
He applauded the council's decision to extend its presence in Dili for
one year through a pruned-back mission, dubbed UNOTIL.
While the situation there remained "calm and stable",
Salgueiro said Portugal considered the Security Council should pay
"particular attention to the situation" as the UN prepares to
withdraw its last peacekeeping contingents later this month.
