H.E President Xanana Gusmao Gives Amnesty to 18 Prisoners

On the occasion of the third anniversary of the devolution of power to the legitimate organs of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and the re-establishment of National Independence, H.E President Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao, in exercising his constitutional competencies, has today authorized the reduction of sentences with a minimum of six months and a maximum of one year reduction of the original sentences to 18 prisoners listed as follows:

   * Augusto Asmeta Tavares receives 9 months amnesty from 8 years and 3 months penalty

   * Angelo Amaral receive 1 year amnesty from 8 years penalty

   * Anastacio Martins receives 1 year amnesty from 10 years and 6 months penalty

   * Amandio da Costa receives 6 months amnesty from 2 years and 6 months penalty

   * Agustinho da Costa receive 1 year amnesty from 14 years penalty

   * Carlos Soares receive 1 year amnesty from 12 years penalty

   * Domingos da Silva Martins receive 1 year amnesty from 4 years penalty

   * Filipe Fernandes receives 6 months amnesty from 4 years penalty

   * Felizarda Dias receives 9 months amnesty from 2 years and 3 months penalty

   * Francisco Ahing dos Reis receives 6 months amnesty from 3 years penalty

   * Gregorio Pereira receive 1 year amnesty from 4 years penalty

   * Joaquim Alves receive 1 year amnesty from 8 year penalty

   * Lino de Carvalho receive 1 year amnesty from 6 years penalty

   * Marcelina Kusi receive 1 year Amnesty from 3 years penalty

   * Santina Mendes receives 1 year amnesty from 4 years penalty

   * Vicente Bragan? receives 6 months Amnesty from 1 year penalty

   * Victor Manuel Alves receives amnesty to be free from the remaining days in Prison

   * Yosep Yeki receives 1 year amnesty from 12 years penalty

The President of the Republic has decided to authorize these clemencies after consultation with the Government and other considerations, including the proven records of good behaviour from the inmates during their period of sentence. The President has also taken into account the inmates willingness to co-operate and fulfil their daily work and efforts to pursue the course of education received whilst in prison.

For President Gusmao "These clemency measures have an extraordinary character, and are aimed at contributing towards the social reintegration of the inmates, and are utmost important for the process of developing a more just society".
