The International Stabilization Forces (ISF) Commander Brigadier-General Mal Rerden has been replaced by Brigadier-General John Hutcheson.

US ready to cooperate with the new government

The US Ambassador in Timor-Leste, Mr. Hans George Klemm said that the USA is ready to cooperate with the new government of Timor-Leste.

"The Timorese people turned out to vote in the general elections to choose their leaders and the USA is ready to cooperate with this new government," said Mr. Klemm on Tuesday (31/7) after meeting with President José Ramos-Horta at the Presidential Palace in Dili.

Mr. Hans said that the aim of the meeting with the President was to discuss the security situation and the formation of the new government. (DN)

The CNE Spokesperson, Maria Angelina Sarmento informed that the CNE has received the financial reports from ten political parties and coalitions namely UNDERTIM, PR, PUN, PDC, UDT, PST, FRETILIN, coalition ASDT/PSD, and Democratic Alliance KOTA/PPT. She said financial reports have also been received from the presidential candidates such as Manuel Tilman, Francisco Guterres Lu-Olo and Francisco Xavier do Amaral.

"We see that given the time constraints, some political parties and presidential candidates have managed to submit their financial reports. We ask the remaining four political parties and other presidential candidates to submit their reports so the CNE could proceed with the verification," said Ms. Sarmento on Tuesday (31/7) in her office in Dili. Mr. Rerden returned to Australia today (01/8) after leading the ISF for the past nine months.

Before making a decision on the formation of the new government, President José Ramos- Horta reminded the PNTL members to remain neutral.

"We met with President Horta to discuss the security plan preparations in order to avoid any political involvement by PNTL members," said Mr. Afonso de Jesus, the PNTL Commander- designate on Tuesday (31/7).

"I congratulate the new President of the new national parliament, the second authority of our nation. The Defence Forces are ready to cooperate and follow the instructions given by the leaders who run this nation," said Mr. Taur on Tuesday (31/7) after meeting with the President Ramos-Horta in Dili.

He said that the nation’s leaders must work together to maintain calm, peace, stability and development in the country for the benefit of all the people of Timor-Leste. (TP and DN)

The Military and Political Observer, Julio Thomas Pinto on Tuesday (31/7) at the Timor Post office, said that the Alliance won the election for President, Vice-President and secretary of the national parliament. This strong demonstration of the Alliance should provide a sign to the President that the Alliance should also form the new government and nominate its Prime Minister.

He said that – in an effort to ensure peace and stability when the President nominates the Alliance - Fretilin should explain to its supporters that even though they won, they do not hold the majority of the seats in the Parliament. (TP)

The President of National Unity Party (PUN), Fernanda Borges called on [the ruling party] Fretilin not to put so much pressure on the formation of the new government as they only have the minority of the seats in the national parliament.

"If Fretilin forms the new government, it will fail mid-way due to its failing programmes," said Ms. Borges on Tuesday (31/7) at the national parliament. She added that the President should choose the Alliance as it holds the majority of the seats in the national parliament. (TP)

After consultation with all the political party leaders, mainly the Alliance and [the ruling party] Fretilin, President José Ramos-Horta today (01/8) will make a decision on the formation of the new government.

The Alliance (CNRT, ASDT, PSD and PD) has declared that they are ready to accept the President’s decision. They are ready to form the new government if that is what the President decides. The new Spokesperson of the Alliance, Mariano Asanami Sabino said that the Alliance is also prepared to collaborate with Fretilin if the President hands over the power to Fretilin.

On the other hand, [the ruling party] Fretilin maintained its position to form the new government with the minority of the seats in the national parliament. If the President hands the power over to the Alliance, Fretilin will reject the decision.

The Secretary-General of Fretilin, Mari Alkatiri said that it would be unconstitutional for the President to hand over the power to the Alliance. (TP and DN)
