East Timor Government announces programme to combat unemployment using public works [ 2009-11-11 ] Dili, East Timor, 11 Nov The government of East Timor Tuesday in Dili announced a new programme to boost employment via investment in public works, due to be launched soon. According to the Secretary of State for the Council of Ministers, Ágio Pereira, the new programme known as National Programme for Revenue Generation, "to begin soon" will have as its goal the creation of jobs for 50,000 people each year, with 60 days of work per person, for a four-year period. In order to cover the highest possible number of unemployed, the Government has opted, in many cases, to create part time jobs. The Secretary of State for Professional Training and Employment is also promoting professional training activities for young people. So far the government's "Intensive Work project" has covered 65,241 people across the country, providing temporary employment in road maintenance work and cleaning up communities. The number of unemployed in East Timor is around 20,000 and there are 890 companies registered, according to official figures, but a large part of the population, which survives on subsistence agriculture, is not included in these figures.
