East Timor Troops 'teach bomb-making'
JENNY GRANT
An Indonesian military intelligence unit may be training some East Timorese in
bomb-making, according to information received by visiting Ms Gomes.
The visiting diplomat said separate sources had told her the intelligence service known
as SGI was disseminating instructions about how to produce bombs.
"If it is true, it is very worrisome and it will only serve one strategy, and that
is to create chaos," she said.
A spokesman for military intelligence in Dili denied there was a plot to train anyone
in terrorist techniques. He said the SGI forces were sent home from East Timor last year.
Fretilin rebel leaders in the mountains of East Timor say they are keen to produce
bombs to use against the Indonesian military.
Ms Gomes said all acts of revenge should be condemned because they were disrupting the
process of reconciliation.
