Hundreds attend funeral of murdered E. Timorese
DILI, East Timor, Aug. 2 Kyodo
About 500 pro-independence East Timorese on Monday attended the funeral of a
24-year-old man shot dead by members of a pro-Indonesia militia Sunday.
The ceremony was held in the historic Santa Cruz public cemetery, the scene of a
massacre of some 200 pro-independence residents by the Indonesian military on Nov. 12,
1991.
Angelino Amaral was shot dead Sunday morning by two masked gunmen near a United Nations
regional office in the Balide area of Dili.
Indonesian police observed the funeral procession from a distance. Mourners dispersed
peacefully.
'Militias are apparently expecting a retaliation (to the killing),' one resident said.
East Timor Police Spokesman Capt. Widodo said authorities are still looking for
Angelino's killers.
As East Timor prepares for its Aug. 30 referendum on autonomy or independence, violence
has escalated, raising concerns of the international community. The vote has already been
postponed twice due to security considerations.
