Turns down CNRT request to open office in Jakarta RI rejects request for CNRT office in Jakarta
Jakarta, Solid-Net (22/11)
The Indonesian government has turned down a request from
Xanana Gusmao to open a CNRT office in Jakarta. The reason given is that the CNRT only
represents the interests of one group. The decision was announced at a press conference
given by General Wiranto, Minisgter-Coordinator for Political and Security Affairs,
following a cabinet meeting held on Saturday.
Indonesia will however open an office in East Timor.
Wiranto said that the office will probably become Indonesia's embassy in ?East Timor.
Many people see this as being very one-sided and unfair. If
Indonesia were to open itself to the approach from the CNRT for an office in Jakarta, this
would speed up the process of peaceful reconciliation. Militia forces in NTT are known to
be preparing to wage war against the CNRT. 'By being more flexible towards the CNRT, the
Indonesian govt would help to repair the dreadful reputation it has gained in the wake of
the scorched earth policy implemented in East Timor,' some analysts say.
