EAST TIMOR PROJECT PEACE BRIGADES INTERNATIONAL Peace Brigades International Training for Volunteers Bali, Feb. 2-9, 2000 Volunteer for Peace and Human Rights! Peace Brigades International (PBI), founded in 1981, is a non-partisan, international organization committed to practicing nonviolence in creative ways. PBI volunteers, by providing support and accompaniment, create "breathing space" for groups working nonviolently for human rights and social justice. PBI volunteers respond to requests for protective accompaniment from individuals and groups threatened with political violence, facilitate peace education workshops upon request, and disseminate first-hand reports internationally. Dates: February 2-9, 2000. Participants should plan to arrive on the 1st of February. Site: TBA in Bali Cost: US$250 (or equivelant). Lodging and vegetarian food provided. Applications available on the Web at http://www.igc.org/pbi/etp/etp.htm Submit applications to: wromeril@aol.com and nonviolence@igc.org. What is the Training Session? The agenda will include sessions on nonviolence, political analysis of the difference contexts where PBI teams work, reactions to emergency situations, the concept of nonpartisanship, the daily dynamics of life on the teams, and cultural differences. PBI's training methodology employs participatory exercises, role-plays, games, and more. At the end of the week, each volunteer meet with the training team to evaluate their suitability for the work, and joins our pool of available volunteers if accepted. Scheduling for service will be negotiated individually. Volunteers are encouraged and supported to do outreach and fundraising work in their own communities. The training for service in Indonesia and East Timor is held in English. Who can be a PBI Volunteer? PBI volunteers come from many different countries, backgrounds and philosophical perspectives. They share a strong commitment to nonviolence and a belief in the power of local people to create more peaceful and just societies. PBI seeks volunteers age 25 and older. Overseas volunteers must be able to commit to a year of service. Proficiency in Bahasa Indonesian is required for service in Indonesia and East Timor. Portuguese or Tetun is an asset. Perspective volunteers may study in-country to reach competency prior to joining the team. All volunteers must complete a detailed application with references, followed by a telephone interview before being accepted for the training session. |
