Subject: List of U.S. Nov 12 events for East TimorDate: Fri, 06 Nov 1998 13:22:25 -0500 From: "John M. Miller" <fbp@igc.apc.org> To: paarmstrade@igc.apc.org CC: frank@ffitz.com East Timor related events on Nov 12, 1998. Please join us. November 12 marks the 7th anniversary of the massacre of over 270 East Timorese civilians by Indonesian troops at the Santa Cruz cemetery in Dili, East Timor. Despite 10 UN resolutions, the resignation of Indonesian dictator Suharto, the IMF bailout, and recent overwhelming U.S. congressional support for East Timor's self-determination, Indonesia continues to illegally occupy East Timor with administration complicity. Join ETAN and others at the following events to commemorate the dead, educate about the present and promote a just solution. Most events will to demand that the U.S. State Department press Indonesia to and that Indonesia: 1) allow the East Timorese to determine their own government through a UN- sponsored referendum; 2) release all East Timorese and Indonesian political prisoners, including East Timorese resistance leader Xanana Gusmao; 3) allow a permanent international monitoring presence in East Timor to witness the human rights situation and Indonesian troop withdrawals.
