Timor Militiaman
Associated Press April 3, 2001 UN Asks Indonesia To Hand Over Timor Militiaman JAKARTA (AP)--East Timor's U.N. administrators said Tuesday they have asked Indonesian authorities to hand over militiaman Yakobus Bere, who allegedly killed New Zealand U.N. peacekeeper Pvt. Leonard William Manning last July. Bere is currently being detained by Indonesian police in West Timor for the killing. However, officials said they could not hand him over as there was not an extradition treaty between Indonesia and East Timor. New violence broke out along East Timor's border with Indonesia when unidentified gunmen threw grenades and fired shots at U.N. peacekeepers and villages in five separate clashes, officials said Tuesday. No peacekeepers were injured in Monday's incidents. However, an East Timorese woman was wounded when attackers fired at her house.
