Indonesian airline to open new routes to East Timor, India, Taiwan


Indonesia's privately-owned Mentari Lion Airlines will open new routes to East Timor, India, Taiwan and South Korea, an airline executive said Tuesday.

The airline will inaugurate a flight linking Surabaya, in East Java, to Dili in East Timor via Denpasar on Indonesia's resort isalnd of Bali, on May 23, the airline's spokesman Yun Ka told AFP.

"We have already obtained the necessary permit from the UNTAET (the UN transitional administration in East Timor, )" he said.

The flights will be three times a week on Russian-made Yak42D aircraft, Yun Ka said.

On July 1, the airline will serve another route linking Denpasar to Taipei and Seoul, but he added that the flight was still awaiting a permit from the South Korean authorities.

The route will be served by an Airbus 310-300.

Mentari Lion is also planning to open flights to Madras in India, linking it to Medan in North Sumatra and to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, in October, Yun Ka said.

The permits for the routes, also to be served by an Airbus 310-300, were still being prepared.

Mentari Lion, which opened its first domestic flights last year, has a fleet of one Boeing 737-200, five Yak42Ds and will soon receive two Airbus 310s and two MD-82s.
