09 Aug 01 19:02 East Timor: Postal Service Receives First Mail Delivery Truck

More than a year after starting operations, East Timor's fledgling postal service received Thursday the keys to its first mail delivery truck, which will enable distribution of letters in remote areas of the half-island territory.

The keys were formally handed over at a short ceremony in Dili by the East Timorese transition administration's minister of infrastructure, Ovidio de Jesus Amaral.

The postal service began operations on April 29, 2000, with the first items handled being letters from independence leader Xanana Gusmao and UN transition administrator Sergio Vieira de Mello addressed to Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, respectively.

At present, mail service is only operational in the two largest cities, Dili and Baucau, and at the Dili airport. Services include general delivery and mailboxes but not home delivery.
