Border police working alongside immigration authorities have since set up checkpoints in border areas between East Timor and Indonesia as well as at the airport in the capital Dili, Martins said.

The Portuguese News Agency, quoting an Indonesian diplomatic source, identified the four as Feroz Abu Bakar Ganchi, 26, from South Africa, Zubair Ismail, 21, also from South Africa, Mushin Fadhi, 24, from Kuwait, and Mustafa Akhman, 36, from Turkey.

The police have also boosted security at government buildings and parliament as well as at the residences of Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri and President Xanana Gusmao.
