Portugal boosts status as East Timor donor country with 298.1 million euros [ 2006-04-06 ] Dili, East Timor, 06 April - Portugal has boosted its status as principal donor country to East Timor, having granted a total of US$361.8 million since 1999, according to official documents of the Timorese government. The documents, known as external aid records, were prepared by the Ministry of planning and finance for the East Timor conference with development partners that ends Thursday in Dili. These documents show that since 1999 East Timor has received a total of US$1.879 billion, in the form of development project financing and donations. The table which is updated yearly by the Timorese authorities shows that Australia, the second-largest donating country, has supplied US$247.8 million. The European Union takes third place with US$241.2 million, followed by Japan with US$219.5 million. In terms of cooperation with Portugal, education and support for reintroducing the Portuguese language, institutional capacities and good governance as well as support for economic and social development are the main focus of the Annual Cooperation Plan (PAC) for this year, which was signed in January.
