Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia and Timor Leste have agreed to cooperate in addressing the threat of new and old diseases that may spread along their borders.
Indonesian Health Minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih and her Timor Leste counterpart Nelson Martin signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to that effect here on Thursday night.
"The cooperation may lay a firm basis for the two countries to overcome health problems along their borders as well as other health problems that become regional and global concerns," Endang said at the function which was also attended by Timor Leste Ambassador to Indonesia Manuel Serrano.
She further expressed hope that the cooperation would benefit the two countries in strengthening their health cooperation in the future.
Nelson Martin meanwhile said the MoU would serve as an umbrella for the establishment of concrete cooperation in improving the two peoples` health standards.
Under the MoU the two neighboring nations agreed to improve human resources in the health sector through education and training courses as well as to prevent communicable diseases along their borders.
The cooperation also covers improvement of mother and child health, and research and development in the health sector. (*)
