I recently attended the 20th anniversary of the
historic referendum in Timor-Leste. The theme of
the celebration was the international solidarity
that provided crucial support for Timor's
struggle for liberation. I was honored to
participate in official and civil society
events, meeting with new people, and spending
time with long-time colleagues and seasoned
fellow activists.
In Timor-Leste so many people -- from the
prime minister to international activists to
young Timorese -- expressed how much they
admired and appreciated ETAN's decades of
solidarity for the people of Timor-Leste.

Many told me how vital our information sharing
and networking are to their pursuit of justice,
human rights, and genuine democracy in the
region. They depend on us to keep them informed
with news and analysis about Timor-Leste,
Indonesia, and West Papua via our listservs,
social media, and website. You may be one of
them.
Please donate to help maintain and strengthen
ETAN's action and crucial information.
Will you be one of 125 donors we need to
contribute a total of $14,000 to help ETAN begin
2020, on a strong financial footing? Will you
join others in investing in ETAN's pursuit of
justice and the defense of democracy and
human rights?
Please
say yes and donate today!

We made a good
start on #GivingTuesday. Thank you to those who gave. Please
join them by contributing to help us reach our
goal.
ETAN’s email lists and social media reach are
growing:
Every day, ETAN compiles and distributes
information about developments in Timor-Leste to
subscribers to our east-timor listserv, up
from 6,857 direct subscribers at the beginning
of 2019 to 8,116 today. Our West Papua twitter
feed has grown from 6,134 to 8,298 followers as
global concern about Indonesia’s crackdown on
freedom of expression escalates.
We need your help to intensify our pursuit of
justice for the many historic and current
victims of Indonesia's security forces crimes:
from the mass killings in 1965 and 1966 that
brought the dictator Suharto to power, through
the illegal invasion and occupation of
Timor-Leste to the West Papuans facing
intensified repression.
Since his inauguration to a second term,
Indonesia’s President Jokowi has said very
little about human rights. Some of his ministers
have declared that LGBTQ Indonesians are unfit
to serve in government, and, disturbingly, accused
rights-violator former General Prabowo is now Jokowi’s
Minister of Defense.
ETAN's ability to meet these and other
challenges very much depends on support from
people like you.
Please donate today.
Again, thank you
for any support you can give.
A luta continua,
John M. Miller
