I have long appreciated the work of the East
Timor and Indonesia
Action Network
(ETAN). I first met them in 1999 soon after
arriving in the U.S. to seek political asylum
after facing persecution for my work in support
of the West Papuan peoples.
I was
impressed by ETAN's successful campaign to
challenge and change U.S. policy to one
supporting of East Timor's right to
self-determination.
ETAN has
long been a valued ally in our efforts to
educate the U.S. people on West Papua and in our
campaign to demand that the U.S. and Indonesia
respect our rights, including our right to
self-determination.

for the Liberation of West Papua; Tom and Andy
Bernstein Human Rights Fellow at Yale Law School |

ETAN is "A
voice of reason, criticizing the administration's
reluctance to address ongoing human rights violations
and escalating oppression in West Papua and against
religious minorities throughout Indonesia."
- Noam
Chomsky
With limited
news sources this is a great resource for better
understanding the issues that effect Papuans.
We appreciate the time and commitment every
month from WPAT and ETAN to compile this report to
put forth analysis and commentary from reputable
sources within West Papua. Please take the time to
read it, and if you can, further support the efforts
of these two great non-profit organizations by
sharing and donating to help them continue to
provide their invaluable services.

The monthly West Papua
Report focuses on developments affecting West Papuans. The West Papua
Advocacy Team (WPAT) and ETAN have co-published the report since November
2007. The report draws on media accounts, NGO and academic assessments
and analysis, and reports from sources within West Papua. From May 2006-October
2007 it was produced by WPAT alone. Prior to that it was published by
the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Center for Human Rights-Indonesia Support
Group. WPAT also gives the annual
John Rumbiak
Human Rights Defender Award.
