From: "bernard mccune"This is a copy of a
resolution from the Conference of the Australian, Asian and New Zealand Union for
Progressive Judaism, which occured last weekend in Canberra.
East Timor
This conference of the Australian, Asian and New Zealand Union for Progressive Judaism
meeting in November 1998 records and acknowledges the aspirations of the people of East
Timor directed towards attaining the right to determine their own national and political
identity and future. It recommends the government of Indonesia also acknowledge these
matters and accord the people of that province the right to express their own choice in an
unencumbered and predetermined way. The Conference also notes and deplores the continuing
incarceration of Xanana Gusmao and urges the government to take steps that are undoubtedly
within its power to effect his immediate release. The Conference urges the Australian
Government to take such steps as are necessary to pursue the fulfilment of this
recommendation and it regrets the failure to do so compromises our commitment to the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights in this its 50th year.
For more information on this resolution email or call me. I hope to have
a simiar resolution from the Excutive Council of Australian Jewry from their
Conference which starts this Sunday 6th Dec. Bernie AETA/USET
