"My intention is the trial of 200 crimes of homicide prepetrated against (East) Timorese, not a trial of Suharto's political regime," the rightist Popular Party lawmaker said. "Portugal is the administrative power in East Timor and as such has administrative responsibilities for justice in the territory," he added. The United Nations has never recognized Jakarta's sovereignty over the Portuguese territory, which Indonesia invaded in 1975. Correia da Silva's announcement followed his meeting with the Justice Minister to inform the government of his intentions. Last month, Portugal's chief prosecutor determined that national legislation would not permit the extradition request. Copyright© 1996 Agência Lusa E-Mail Agência Lusa Back to December Menu |
