16 NOV 98 - 13:42 East Timor/Portugal: Portuguese Prime Minister urges UN to do its utmost to stop "nightmare" in East Timor

Porto, Nov. 16 (Lusa) - Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres said on Saturday the United Nations should do its utmost to put an end to the "nightmare" in East Timor. Speaking during a visit to Matosinhos on Saturday, Guterres said he was deeply shocked at news of a "second massacre" in East Timor in November 1991, days after the Santa Cruz cemetery massacre in that month. The prime minister made the statement in reaction to statements by Manuel and Mario Carrascalão on the existence of a "second massacre" in Dili in November 1991. Speaking in two separate interviews with LUSA in Macau and Lisbon's Expresso weekly, the two prominent East Timorese political leaders (who are brothers) said hundreds of people had been killed by Indonesian soldiers in the two massacres. Manuel Carrascalão put the total number of victims at over 500. Guterres said he had received the news with a feeling of "deep sorrow," describing the two reported massacres as "deeply shocking.-Lusa
